International GPs

Understand your pathway to general practice in Australia.

Registration, Medicare eligibility, location rules, supervision and immigration can all affect which Australian GP roles are suitable for you. MedzConnect helps bring those requirements together so you can focus on realistic opportunities.

Start with the pathway, not the job title

Two GPs with similar experience can have different Australian registration and Medicare requirements. We therefore treat pathway eligibility, location and employer support as part of the matching process.

This page is a general guide, not registration, immigration or legal advice. Requirements can change and should always be confirmed with the relevant Australian authority for your circumstances.
Your route

From overseas qualification to an eligible Australian position

There is no single pathway for every international GP. A sensible starting point is to establish your registration route first, then assess which positions satisfy the requirements that apply to you.

01

Identify your registration pathway

Your route depends on your qualifications, training and specialist status. International medical graduates may enter through the Standard, Competent Authority or Specialist pathways, depending on eligibility.

02

Verify qualifications and registration requirements

Primary-source verification and the evidence required for registration vary by pathway. The AMC and Medical Board of Australia publish the authoritative requirements for each route.

03

Find a position that fits your pathway

The right role may need to meet location, supervision, registration, Medicare and immigration requirements. DPA and MMM classifications can be particularly important for overseas-trained GPs.

04

Coordinate visa and relocation

Where sponsorship is required, the employer and candidate may need to coordinate registration, employment and immigration steps before commencement.

AHPRA, the Medical Board, AMC and RACGP

These organisations have different roles. Understanding who assesses what can make the process much easier to navigate.

AHPRA & Medical Board of Australia

AHPRA supports the Medical Board of Australia in administering medical registration. The Board sets registration standards and requirements for practising medicine in Australia.

Medical Board IMG guidance

Australian Medical Council (AMC)

The AMC manages assessment for the Standard Pathway and primary-source verification processes used across IMG pathways. Standard Pathway candidates generally complete the AMC CAT MCQ plus the clinical examination or an accredited workplace-based assessment.

RACGP

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners has pathways for eligible specialist international medical graduates seeking recognition and Fellowship in Australian general practice.

PESCI, supervision, DPA and MMM

PESCI

A Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview (PESCI) is an assessment used in some IMG registration circumstances. Whether one is required depends on the position, registration pathway and Medical Board requirements.

Supervised practice

Some registration pathways and positions require supervised practice. The required level, duration and supervision arrangements depend on the candidate's registration pathway and individual circumstances.

DPA

Distribution Priority Area (DPA) identifies GP catchments with workforce need. DPA is used in the section 19AB Medicare rules that affect many overseas-trained doctors and foreign graduates of accredited medical schools.

MMM

The Modified Monash Model (MMM) classifies locations from MM1 metropolitan areas through to MM7 very remote communities. It is used across Australian health-workforce programs and incentives.

Check a location before relying on its classification

DPA and MMM classifications are location-specific and can be updated. The Australian Government Health Workforce Locator is the authoritative tool for checking a current address.

Why DPA can matter to an international GP

Section 19AB of the Health Insurance Act affects access to Medicare benefits for many overseas-trained doctors and foreign graduates of accredited medical schools. For GPs, DPA is used to identify locations where restricted doctors may be eligible to access Medicare provider arrangements.

The commonly described “10-year moratorium” can apply from Australian medical registration, with rules and possible scaling depending on individual circumstances. This is one reason a role's exact location matters, not just its state or suburb name.

Visa options

Sponsorship depends on the role and the candidate

Australian employers can sponsor eligible skilled workers through several visa programs. Common employer-sponsored routes include the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482), Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) and Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa (subclass 494), subject to the requirements of each program.

Registration and visa eligibility are separate processes. A role offering sponsorship does not by itself establish medical-registration or Medicare eligibility.

Finding an eligible position

MedzConnect job listings can surface structured details such as DPA, MMM, supervision, IMG-friendliness, sponsorship, employment type and practice type. These filters help narrow the search, but final eligibility still depends on your individual pathway and the specific practice.

Relocation

Moving a career — and often a family

International recruitment does not end when a contract is signed. A successful move can involve registration milestones, immigration, housing, family logistics and onboarding into a new healthcare system and community.

Important: MedzConnect provides recruitment and pathway coordination support. Registration decisions are made by the Medical Board of Australia/AHPRA and relevant assessment bodies; visa decisions are made by the Australian Government; and Medicare eligibility is determined under the applicable Australian Government rules. Always verify current requirements with the relevant authority before making employment or relocation decisions.
